  • Just checking in from my hotel room in Elyria, OH.  Dave and I are on a whirlwind trip to the University of Maryland where he is giving a seminar tomorrow (friday), then on Saturday we are driving south to Florida.  We are taking my mil's car to her.  She left our house on Dec 3, so she's been relying on friends and family to get her places.  Then we fly home on Monday, 12/15.  Whew!

The good news is my Christmas letters are written and sent and all my gifts are purchased, if not wrapped, except for my difficult father.  I wish I could give my mom a healed hip, but she's going to have to wait for the new year for a hip replacement.  So, my first thought is what do I have to do to make sure my hip doesn't give out now that both of my parents have failed hips?  Any ideas?

Gotta run.  Or sit, as the case is.  I'm the navigator and this time it's easy since we got a GPS system.  I'll check in as I can.

Book recommendation:  People of the Book by Gwendaline Brooks.  We just discussed that in book club.  Interesting.

  • Have a great trip!  Call me Saturday!

  • enjoy yourself , I think lots of exercise is the answer to the hip problem

  • My sister is looking at a replacement too, but they're saying she's too young yet.  I'll ask her what they told her about helping it from getting worse.

  • @englishjuls - Exercise is definitely not the answer.  Osteoarthritis means that the cartilege has disappeared in the hip joint.  Exercise really made my problem worse.  More stress on a hip that has no cartilege...very painful.  It is important to keep moving as much as possible , cycling and swimming but it doesn't make the cartilege regrow.

  • You have at least one of the "risk" factors and that is heredity.  The other 2 are obesity(although I know of thin people who have had to have hip replacement) and the other "risk" factor is age.   Maybe you'll be like your grandma.  She never needed it.  When she fell at age 89, it wasn't because of her hip.

Just keep the ice away when we come up there!

    Love ya!

  • Glad you had time to post.  Sounds like you are running (driving) a fast paced race.  Hope our weather is good when you fly back home on Monday.

    Happy Holidays.

  • Hope you have a safe trip, and all is well.

  • The welcome mat is out here too.  Wish I'd have paid more attention to xanga lately as you guys would have saved the cost of the hotel room.  Wishing you safe travels and cool holiday blogs with all the family there.

  • Happy Birthday on the 18th.  Hope you have a great day.

  • Guess you are home by now and probably caught up on things too. Hope your trip to FL was fun. *hugs*
